Mapping the Terrain – ‘Ductectives’

CADE received support from the Learning and Teaching Fund to explore the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) with teaching. Steve Terry and David Riches developed a project with Writtle Infant School and used the technology with Year 2 Landscape and Garden Design Students to develop a client brief. The PDAs were used as a way of engaging with the children of the school and investigating their needs and aspirations for the design of the grounds. The students created a treasure hunt using detective characters called ‘Ductectives’ which encouraged the children to explore the grounds of the school and answer a series of questions. ‘Create A Scape’ software was used to implement the project.
