As part of the ‘Invitation to Create’ initiative (2004) CADE ‘s Creative Design Assistant, Jelena Mone, submitted a piece entitled ‘The Shadow Over Us’. This work formed part of a sculpture trail held in the historic garden of Easton Lodge, Essex. As an artist Jelena was “struck by the theme of aircraft which was constantly re-presenting itself, firstly in the historical context of the garden, as it was used as an air force base in the Second World War, and by the current noise from overhead planes as the gardens lay directly under the flight path of Stansted Airport.
The ‘shadow’ of a B26 plane was selected as it would have flown from Easton lodge in the Second World War. A template of the aircraft outline was created with the help of Graham Thompstone, Principal Lecturer in Computer Aided Design, and cut from mypex, a horticultural groundcover membrane. Once at the gardens the ‘shadow’ template was covered with shredded tyres, sponsored by local business Eastern Waste Disposal, to draw attention to the countrywide need to recycle waste tyres. The use of rubber formed a strong reminder of its integral use in aircraft wheels and as a material used in runway construction.
Gardens Manager, Brian Creasey, commented at the time, “It is highly pertinent that Jelena will be creating one of the B26 Marauder aircraft. These were flown by the USAAF from the Easton Lodge airfield and were involved in D-Day operations. The USAAF left Easton Lodge in autumn of ’44, almost exactly 60 years ago. With a width of more then 10 metres, the sculpture will be visible from the air.”
