International sculptor Henri-Georges Vidal joined Writtle College as Artist in Residence for two weeks during April 2005.
Henri-Georges had worked in Africa and Brazil, creating sculptures that drew their inspiration from the local environment. He was following a similar path at Writtle responding to both the locality and the users of the College. The culmination of the residency was a sculpture inspired by the cupola on the main College building. The sculpture, in the form of a beacon, was carved from timber harvested from woodland managed by the College and was made complete with the addition of fired clay forms. The clay had been collected from the spoil from an agricultural reservoir in construction at the College and prepared as modelling material by the students. By doing this they considered how art produced from the local environment can be used to interpret and understand a place. The residency was part of the Essex Picardy Arts Exchange programme funded by Essex County Council.
