‘Droplets on a leaf’ by David Riches
Living Art in the Landscape, 1998
The conference explored the use of plants as a medium for environmental art, and was attended by artists, conservation professionals, garden designers and landscape managers, as well as students. Speakers included: Jim Buchanan, Landscape Maker; Stephanie Bunn, Environmental Artist; Sandra Nicholson, Senior Lecturer in Horticulture; Jill Raggett, Senior Lecturer in Horticulture, Clare Wilks, Environmental Artist and David Wright, Director of Commissions East. The artist in residence for the conference Stephanie Bunn, worked on the campus with over twenty National Diploma in Horticulture students to create willow sculptures.
The morning sessions concerned the benefits of using plants for sculpture, the design implications, and practical considerations. The afternoon’s activities were a series of walks focused on plant care and establishment, along with the viewing of artwork created on the day. Finally there was the opportunity to hear the experience of artists working with a range of communities.
