Lynn Schwartz
‘A Certain Order’, 2006
Lynn Schwartz joined Writtle College as Artist in Residence for two weeks during May 2006.
She was selected for the residency due to her interest in communication and reinterpretation of existing systems and classifications. Working with members of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, including Scientists Ron Fryer and Margaret Somerville, Lynn explored new ways in which scientific terminology and nomenclature could be made more meaningful and memorable. In addition, she gave presentations of her past work and ran a number of workshops including ‘Walk and Draw’ sessions for both students and staff. The residency was part of the Essex Picardy Arts Exchange programme funded by Essex County Council.
Lynn’s reflection’s on the residency:
“Each day I spent part of my time conversing with science teachers and students to see what types of projects they were working on. These conversations were a very important part of my creative process. I hung my preliminary sketches in the foyer of the science building from the second day onwards. This way I was able to see what kinds of reactions my approach might have… I especially enjoyed the diverse ages, cultures and interests of the students. I was able to explore many different approaches to the theme of Science and Art.”
