‘The Work Of Memory’, 2003
Marie Claude Quignon joined Writtle College as Artist in Residence for two weeks during April 2003.
Marie Claude has worked extensively with a range of communities to produce her artworks being particularly inspired by the theme of communities experiencing change. On her first visit to Writtle College, Marie Claude was inspired by a small piece of graffiti, which she saw inscribed on the white painted surface of a glasshouse. Working with a member of academic staff, she devised a questionnaire which was used to generate words to express a collective consciousness of College life. Students and staff were asked to share with the artist their given name, the town of their birth and to spontaneously select five words that expressed their experience of Writtle College. These responses were scribed onto a glasshouse by volunteers and formed a stunning piece illuminating people’s reactions to the College. An analysis of the wordspdf Icon used showed that the most frequently chosen were associated with friendship and reflected the importance of this aspect of the Writtle College community. The residency was part of the Essex Picardy Arts Exchange programme funded by Essex County Council.
